Wednesday, 23rd April 2014 Whats next in Pollensa, Mallorca?
I have just finished the last mouthful of the sweet Mallorcan Easter pastry, un rubiol, and already my taste buds are preparing themselves for the annual Pollensa Wine Fair.
This year will be the 11th edition of this very popular event which is held in the Cloisters of Santa Domingo in Pollensa town, nestled at the foot of the Tramuntana mountain range and just 7kms inland from the popular tourist resort of Puerto Pollensa. The town of Pollensa is surrounded by picturesque countryside , scattered with beautiful villas and their private pools which make an ideal base to enjoy your family holiday in Mallorca.
We have had to wait a little longer this year as in previous years the event has been held in April. It`s a fantastic chance to sample many of the wonderful quality wines grown and produced in the Balearic Islands. No less than 35 different cellars will be displaying their variety of red, white and rosé wines, and a few cavas too! Its not only about the tasting, you understand! Each cellar has one or two staff on hand to provide all the information about the variety of grapes used, the varying lengths of fermentation and the time spent ageing in the different type of barrel.
Previously years a useful little booklet has been provided listing all the participants details and allowing you to mark off the wines you taste and make some notes. I guess that is just in case you are a little confused at the end of event, which reminds me to suggest that you do not visit the event on an empty stomach!
Mallorcan wines are of an extremely good quality and I recommend that you choose one from the wine list next time you are here on holiday; or why not pick one up in the supermarket and sip it on your own balcony at the end of a scorching day on the beach.
If you are looking for suitable accomodation from where you can walk into the wine fair then why not take a look on my webpage at Casa Nelly, a pretty traditional 2 bedroom house, full of character and sat alongide the famous Calvario steps. This comfortable house offers the most spectcular scenery, privacy, peace and quiet and yet an easy walk into the town to enjoy the restaurants, weekly market and atmosphere that Pollensa offers.
Salud! Cheers!
